Balloon Sinuplasty or Septoplasty:
What Problem Does Each Procedure Treat?

Balloon Sinuplasty or Septoplasty

Balloon sinuplasty and septoplasty can both be discussed when nasal or sinus symptoms interfere with daily life, but they treat different problems. Balloon sinuplasty widens blocked sinus openings to improve mucus drainage, while septoplasty corrects a deviated nasal septum that may restrict airflow through the nose.

At Accent Sinus Center, we evaluate the causes of persistent congestion, sinus pressure, and difficulty breathing through the nose before discussing which treatment may be appropriate. Understanding the difference between these procedures can help you ask informed questions about your options.

Balloon Sinuplasty vs. Septoplasty

  • Balloon sinuplasty: Treats selected cases of chronic or recurrent sinusitis by widening narrowed sinus drainage openings.
  • Septoplasty: Corrects a crooked or displaced nasal septum to improve airflow when the deviation causes significant symptoms.

Neither procedure treats every cause of nasal congestion. The appropriate choice depends on what an examination and, when indicated, imaging reveals about your nasal passages and sinuses.

What Problem Does Balloon Sinuplasty Treat?

Your sinuses are air-filled spaces around your nose and eyes. They produce mucus that normally drains through small openings into the nasal cavity. When inflammation narrows these openings, mucus may not drain properly, contributing to sinus pressure, congestion, and recurring sinus symptoms.

Balloon sinuplasty is designed to widen certain blocked sinus openings. During the procedure, an ENT guides a small balloon catheter into the affected drainage pathway and gently inflates it to expand the opening. The balloon is then deflated and removed.

An ENT may consider balloon sinuplasty for selected patients with chronic sinusitis or recurrent sinus infections when appropriate medical treatment has not provided enough relief. A sinus CT scan can help determine whether there is objective evidence of sinus disease and whether the affected anatomy is suitable for the procedure.

However, balloon sinuplasty is not appropriate for every type of sinus disease. It does not straighten a deviated septum, and it may not address conditions involving extensive nasal polyps or other problems requiring a different surgical approach.

What Problem Does Septoplasty Treat?

The nasal septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the left and right sides of your nose. Ideally, it allows air to pass through both nasal passages. When the septum bends significantly to one side, it can narrow the airway and make breathing more difficult.

Septoplasty is surgery to straighten or reposition the deviated portions of the septum. An ENT may recommend it when the deviation contributes to persistent nasal blockage, difficulty breathing through the nose, or other symptoms that have not improved sufficiently with appropriate nonsurgical treatment.

A deviated septum does not always require surgery. Some people have a crooked septum without noticeable symptoms, while others experience congestion that is also affected by allergies, enlarged turbinates, or inflammation inside the nose. Medications may reduce swelling from these other conditions, but they cannot straighten the septum itself.

Septoplasty focuses on improving the nasal airway. Although correcting a deviation may help some patients with sinus problems, septoplasty does not directly widen the sinus drainage openings in the way balloon sinuplasty does.

How Do You Know Which Procedure You May Need?

The most useful starting point is identifying what is causing your symptoms. Persistent facial pressure, thick nasal drainage, and recurring sinus infections may prompt an evaluation for sinusitis. Ongoing difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils may raise concern about a deviated septum or another source of nasal obstruction.

Your ENT may review your symptom history, examine the inside of your nose, and use nasal endoscopy or imaging when appropriate. A sinus CT scan may be particularly helpful when evaluating suspected chronic sinus disease or determining whether balloon sinuplasty is suitable.

Treatment may also begin with medication, saline rinses, or management of allergies, depending on the diagnosis. If a structural problem or persistent sinus disease remains after appropriate treatment, your ENT can discuss whether a procedure is likely to address the problem identified.

Can Someone Need Both Balloon Sinuplasty and Septoplasty?

Yes. Some patients have both narrowed sinus drainage pathways and a deviated septum that obstructs nasal airflow. In those cases, an ENT may consider treating both problems, sometimes during the same surgical plan.

That does not mean both procedures are necessary whenever someone has congestion or sinusitis. Each procedure should have a clear purpose based on the patient’s symptoms, examination findings, and diagnostic results. Your ENT can explain whether one procedure is sufficient or whether separate anatomical problems need to be addressed.

Schedule a Sinus Consultation with Accent Head & Neck

Persistent congestion, sinus pressure, and difficulty breathing can have overlapping causes, so choosing a procedure starts with understanding the problem rather than focusing on the name of a treatment. At Accent Head & Neck, we can evaluate your symptoms, explain the findings, and discuss whether balloon sinuplasty, septoplasty, another treatment, or continued medical care may be appropriate for you.

Schedule a sinus consultation with Accent Sinus Center to discuss your symptoms and understand which treatment options may fit your needs.
